Iowa Virtual Academy
Overview
The Iowa Virtual Academy was a State of Iowa initiative to aid the expansion of learning opportunities for all high school students (grades 9-12) by providing them access to a variety of course offerings. Through this initiative, the Academy addressed critical educational issues such as teacher shortages, availability of courses including advanced courses, and accessible learning. The courses were reviewed by Iowa Master Educators and the Academy's administration to ensure quality content. In addition, the courses were taught by licensed instructors from either the school districts or post-secondary institutions.
The goals of the Academy were: 1) Support learning within the school districts' current infrastructure, 2) Collaborate with diverse stakeholders, 3) Meet the needs for all learners, 4) Explore the best possible delivery method through cutting edge technologies including Internet-based and Iowa Communications Network courses.
Participants
The participants were high school students from all districts wanting to take courses and teachers from school districts and post-secondary institutions.
