Reading First
Overview
Reading First is a focused nationwide effort to enable all students to become successful early readers. The goal is to improve the reading achievement through high-quality, comprehensive reading instruction in kindergarten through grade 3. The Iowa Reading First program builds upon a solid foundation of research designed to select, implement, and provide professional development for teachers using scientifically based reading programs. The program also ensures accountability through ongoing, valid and reliable screening, diagnostic, and classroom-based assessment.
Participants
The Iowa Reading First program began in 2003 with 55 participating schools within 30 districts. Today, there are 99 school buildings within 46 districts participating in the Iowa Reading First Program. Approximately 10,000 students participate on a yearly basis in the program.
